Bangladesh Coast Guard orders 7 ultra-modern SAR patrol boats

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has awarded a local shipbuilder to construct seven ultra-modern fast patrol boats based on a foreign design.

Under a transfer of technology scheme the Dockyard & Engineering Works (DEW) Narayanganj will build seven Barracuda SV125s for the Bangladesh Coast Guard. These boats are designed for search & rescue as well as coastal patrol duties. Being, fully self-righting, able to recover if capsized by waves the boats have the ability to operate in all-weather conditions.

The SV125 also known as BD SAR-14 have a ‘V’ hull design with amidships and transom dead rise of 24 degrees and a very fine wave piercing bow of 65 degrees allowing for excellent seakeeping abilities. The boats have a 4m beam ensuring excellent dynamic stability at sea.

Powered by a pair of 650hp Caterpillar C8.7 marine diesel engines, ZF 380 two speed gearboxes with CD3L surface drive propulsion by France Helices the BD SAR-14 can output a maximum speed of 43kts and a cruise speed of 32kts at 70% of maximum power. At such speeds the boats have a range of 600nm utilising long range fuel tanks.

The advanced boats can accommodate a crew of four and two passengers on well-appointed cabin with SHOXS shock mitigation seating. The boats are equipped with an array of advanced Garmin navigation equipment including two 15” and a 12” display screens, for ECIDS, radar and sonar, radio communication is provided by two DSC VHF’s. A CCTV system is installed with cameras covering the deck areas and ER.

The boats are designed with integral transom and dive ladder allowing for dive operations from a spacious aft deck. A Humphree full stabilization system is fitted comprising 2x 500mm Interceptors outboard and 2x 300mm Interceptors inboard, allowing full control of the crafts running trim and improving ride comfort and reducing rolling in rough sea conditions.

The vessels can be armed with two to three machine gun posts for 7.62mm machine guns. DEW secured rights to manufacture seven BD SAR-14 boats from Bangladesh Coast Guard utilising technology from Safehaven Marine in Ireland.
