I have no qualms about starting formal, mutually beneficial ties with the state of Israel. Bangladesh doesn't have to be like India, it doesn't need to play a double standard game. It can be far more effective in relation to the Palestinian statehood than it can by simply not recognizing a country that already exists. And let me remind you, Israel does not just simply exist, it thrives, its powerful, its a useful country. Bangladesh could effectively neuter India using Israeli equipment and tactics against the much larger Indian Army, that is an analogue to the Syrian Arab republic's army.

The Coronavirus is not going to go away. It might turn in to a seasonal flu type deal so vaccination will be the mainstay to combat it. Coming back to the economy - I believe governments throughout the world are facing similar crisis - some more than others. Countries we thought had the right capabilities to handle any crisis proved to be the weakest whereas some others did well to combat the problems. Diversification of the nation's industries will be important to any economic revival program. You cannot rely on manpower exports and RMG to become a major economy. Those things will take you to a certain level but it was never going to be the solution whether or not coronavirus was a factor. Moreover as a country with a population of some 170 million the internal market is huge. Now is the time for innovation and even the defence sector can benefit from timely R&D exercise in partnership with experienced foreign companies. Many countries will be looking for partnerships now as they want to kick start their own economies. It might be a good time to get FTA done.

This is not really about Bangladesh being secular or democratic because the US works with KSA, UAE, Israel and co so there is hardly any effect in reality about democracy or human rights unless you happen to be America's enemy. 4. Once Bangladesh and Boeing for example sign the attack helicopter deal there will be a great deal of support coming in from the very senate because companies such as Boeing are very keen to increase their market footprint around the world including establish new frontier markets in places like Bangladesh and Thailand. Do not worry, we are solid.

Deep sea port project in Matarbari gains pace, Sonadia dropped 'Our neighbouring country Sri Lanka is facing trouble after building a deep sea port with Chinese loans' The government has decided to drop the plan of building a deep sea port in Sonadia, Cox’s Bazar and fast track the proposed deep sea port in Matarbari. Official sources confirmed to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday that the move came after giving consideration to the vulnerability of the ecosystem of Sonadia island, which was declared an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) back in 1999. But sources also hinted that some geopolitical considerations also came into play. At the 5th meeting of the Fast Track Project Monitoring Committee, held at the Prime Minister’s Office on January 19, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that there would be no deep sea port in Sonadia as such construction would damage the ecological balance of the area, a meeting source told this correspondent. It was expected that China would provide funds to build Sonadia deep sea port and a feasibility study was carried out to this end back in 2009. But eventually no Sino-Bangla deal was struck all these years. The US, China and India, all global and regional big economies, have their diverse perspectives centring on the Bay of Bengal zone. Seeking anonymity, a government policymaker told Dhaka Tribune: “We do not want to get involved in regional politics, which may affect our country’s development. Besides, Bangladesh is surrounded by some big foreign deep sea ports, so we do not need to build a shipping terminal here. At the same time, Japan is developing the Matarbari area for an LNG terminal. We can easily develop Matarbari as a deep sea port. That’s why the government changed the decision of constructing a deep sea port in Sonadia.” “Our neighbouring country Sri Lanka is facing trouble after building a deep sea port with Chinese loans. Now China (China Merchants Ports Holding Company having 70 percent leasing stake) has a large stake at this port. So we were cautious about taking Chinese credit for Sonadia,” explained the policymaker. On January 18, China and Myanmar signed 33 memoranda of understanding (MoUs), agreements, protocols and exchange letters, including concession agreements and shareholders’ agreement, regarding the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone Deep Sea Port Project in Myanmar. During a two-day visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping sealed the deep sea port deal in Kyaukpyu area, which is located in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State that borders Bangladesh to the north and the Bay of Bengal to the west. Experts note that Bangladesh’s dropping of the Sonadia port project encouraged Beijing to look to building an alternative deep-sea port in Myanmar for this region, while India is constructing a road network through its seven-sister region to access the deep-sea port in Myanmar. Dr Amena Mohsin, who teaches international relations at the University of Dhaka, told Dhaka Tribune: “I think Bangladesh is now doing global economic diplomacy. Recent trends show that the country wishes to move forward from its old diplomatic tactics. Previously, Bangladesh used to practice the same pattern of pro-India or pro-China diplomacy but now its strategies are changing.” “China didn’t stand beside Bangladesh in resolving the Rohingya crisis. Rather, China always lent support to Myanmar on the issue. I think this Chinese strategy also forced Bangladesh to think otherwise,” elaborated Dr Amena Mohsin. Matarbari port project gaining pace Two days after the decision to drop the Sonadia deep sea port project, the Chief Representative of the Bangladesh Office of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Hitoshi Hitara, met State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury at the latter’s secretariat office on January 21. A press release issued by the shipping ministry states, “Matarbari port is a highest priority project of the government. We are going to place this project before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting soon, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury told Hitoshi Hirata.” Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Khalid Mahymud Chowdhury said, “Usually if a sea port is of over14-meter depth, it is considered a deep sea port. The Matarbari port is going to be 19 meters deep. In a sense we can use it as a deep sea port.” Officials of the shipping ministry said the primary cost of Matarbari port development is estimated to be Tk.17,777.16 crore. JICA and Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will construct it jointly. Of the amount, JICA will provide Tk 12,892.76 crore, the Bangladesh government Tk 2,671.15 crore and the CPA Tk 2,213.94 crore. The timeframe of this project is from 2020 to 2024. According to the plan, two jetties having a capacity of handling 8,000 TUEs (twenty-foot equivalent units) would be readied at Matarbari. The jetties will make possible the handling of more than three times the 2,500 TUEs daily now being handled at Chittagong Port. How the business hub will look The JICA team also shared a drawing, ‘Future image of Moheshkhali-Matarbari area,’ at Tuesday’s meeting at the shipping ministry. Dhaka Tribune has collected a copy of that image. A graphic presentation of the proposed project gives a beautiful look of the project site and its adjoining areas, having a 28km four-lane road with 17 bridges. The total length of the bridges is estimated to be nearly 7km. Additionally, a number of high-rises will be constructed there, to facilitate all kinds of works and accommodation. Once completed, the project is expected to draw a number of tourists to the once remote island. Member (Administration and Planning) of Chittagong Port Authority, Md Zadar Alam, told this correspondent that the port would be connected to the national highway from Chokoria to Cox’s Bazar. “There will be two jetties: one is a 300-meter multipurpose jetty and the other is a 460-meter container jetty,” he added.

We talked with Brigadier General Md Tariqul Alam Tariq, the Defence Attaché of Bangladesh to Turkey, who has played a significant role in the development of relations between the two countries, and who was kind enough to take the time to answer our questions about the point achieved in this cooperation. MSI TDR: The Turkish companies participate in various defence and aerospace projects in Bangladesh. Can you give us information about these projects? Brigadier General TARIQ: Many of the Turkish Defence Industries are already engaged with DGDP (Directorate General of Defence Purchase) for the procurement of various defence products of Bangladesh Armed Forces. In the past, Bangladesh Armed Forces procured various defence hardware through DGDP tender or direct purchase under G2G contract. In the recent past, Bangladesh Army procured different types of Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) like Mine Resistance Ambush Protected (MRAP), Tactical (Tac) and Command (Comd) from OTOKAR. A procurement contract has been signed last year between Bangladesh Army and ROKETSAN to procure Multiple Launcher Rocket System (MLRS) for Bangladesh Army. The project is in progress. Besides, many other defence products are being evaluated and procured by Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force from various defence industries of Turkey. MSI TDR: Why did Bangladesh prefer the Turkish companies in these projects? Brigadier General TARIQ: Bangladesh procurement system demands major defence hardware of European standard. As Turkey maintains European/NATO standard in the productions, therefore, Turkish products get standardized fairly easily. To avoid monopoly, Bangladesh Armed Forces follow a transparent and open procurement system where, companies from all over the world are invited to participate tenders. Turkish companies are winning the tenders for product compatibility, lower price and easy after sale service. Team of experts from related defence industries should maintain good contact with three services to plug the communication gap. As the defence products of Turkey maintains international standard with reasonable price, there are fair opportunities to win the open tenders of procurement in Bangladesh. MSI TDR: What defence and aerospace projects will be on Bangladesh’s agenda in the upcoming period? Brigadier General TARIQ: As part of ‘Forces Goal 2030’, Bangladesh Armed Forces is developing its Forces to cope with future requirement. As one of the highest troops contributing countries under Peace Keeping Operations, Bangladesh Armed Forces is maintaining its inventory keeping pace with the present day requirement in the conflicting zones. Bangladesh Armed Forces has been actively participating in United Nations Peace Keeping Operation since 1988. Under long term program (Forces Goal 2030) Bangladesh maintains a balanced defence hardware procurement every year. In that count, Bangladesh Armed Forces studies and evaluates the defence products of Turkish Defence Industries besides other foreign Defence Industries. Bangladesh’s economy to overtake Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore in 2024 In 2024, Bangladesh will rank as the 30th largest economy in the world, overtaking Malaysia’s rank of 32nd that year Bangladesh is set to become the world's 26th largest economy within the next decade, says a report published by the Centre for Economics and Business Research. In a surprising note, the report predicts that in 2024, Bangladesh will rank as the 30th largest economy in the world, overtaking Malaysia's rank of 32nd that year. Bangladesh's economy ranked 40th largest in 2020, while Malaysia ranked 34th. In 2024, Bangladesh's economy will overtake heavyweights such as Hong Kong (37th), Singapore (38th), Denmark (40th) and Norway (36th). Hong Kong's economy is currently ranked 35th, Singapore 37th, Denmark 39th and Norway 30th. Meanwhile, India is predicted to become the 3rd largest economy in 2034, behind China – which will dominate the global economy, and the USA – which will slip to second position. The London based think tank published The World Economic League Table 2020 on December 26 last year, ranking the world's largest economies. Bangladesh has moved up one notch from its position last year, and has been persistently maintaining its rank as the 2nd largest economy in South Asia, just one-step behind neighbouring India. In 2034, Bangladesh is predicted to have the 25th largest economy in the world. Fueled by a consistent economic growth over the last five years, Bangladesh has leapt from having the 57th largest economy in 2014 to 41st in 2019. The country's average economic growth has been 7.39 percent in the last five fiscal years. Bangladesh even hit a record growth of 8.15 percent in the last fiscal year. Three rapidly growing Asian economies – Philippines, Bangladesh and Malaysia – have been listed as the fastest risers in the table amongst the larger economies. The Philippines rose from 38th place in 2019 to 36th place in 2020, and Malaysia from 35th to 34th during that same period. In 2029, India is predicted to remain the largest economy in South Asia followed by Bangladesh and Pakistan. Whereas, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan will remain at the bottom of the table. With a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) adjusted GDP per capita of $5,028 in 2019, Bangladesh is a lower middle-income country. The economy of the country performed well in 2019, expanding by an impressive 7.8 percent. This, however, is below the 7.9 percent GDP growth recorded in 2018, said the report. The population has risen at a rate of just 1 percent per year since 2014. This means that per capita incomes have grown considerably in recent years. Government debt as a share of GDP rose to 34.6 percent in 2019. This is up from 34 percent in 2018. Despite this increase, the public sector finances remain in good shape. The relatively low debt burden has provided the government with the fiscal headroom to operate a budget deficit of 4.8 percent in 2019. Speaking to The Business Standard, Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha, associate professor of Dhaka University's economics department, said, "Every country goes through a phase where its GDP peaks. Bangladesh is currently going through this phase." Dr Bidisha also serves as a research fellow in the South Asian Network on Economic Modelling. The Centre for Economics and Business Research has been delivering independent economic forecasting and analysis for decades. The centre also publishes the World Economic League Table, which tracks the size of different economies across the globe and projects changes over the next 15 years, up to 2034. In September 2018, the HSBC – in a report on 75 countries titled "The World in 2030" – also projected that Bangladesh will be the 26th largest economy in the world by 2030.

Bangladesh maintains unofficial ties with Israel through third parties such as Singapore. The Bangladesh Army imported Israeli made Spike ATGMs during 2011-2012 and the air force also uses Mi-17 helicopter simulators which are developed by an Israeli company with offices in Singapore. Unfortunately now the Bangladesh Army changed its policies as far as weapons imports are concerned. Due to introduction of standardisation the Army has to inspects the production facilities of the manufacturers for any standardised or significant military equipment. Equipment like Spike are made in Israeli factories and transfer of technology cannot be undertaken so acquisition of Spike and its technology could not be done. Israel also asked Singapore not to export the Spike ATGM to Bangladesh fearing some strong Indian reaction. This has kept the Indians and Islamist's very happy as they are on the same page as far as Israel is concerned.

Photo: TBS The manufacture of the first body parts of hydro accumulators for passive core flooding system for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has been completed in Russia. Passive core flooding system is the latest technology to provide safety, which is not affected by human errors. It is a crucial element designed to release decay heat in the event of a serious coolant accident in the reactor's primary circuit. Petrozavodsk Branch of "AEM-Technology," a concern of Atomenergomash, the machine-building division of the Russia's State Corporation Rosatom, has been manufacturing the system. The parts will be sent to Bangladesh by the end of this year once the corresponding infrastructure is ready to install the parts in the reactor area, said a source at the Rooppur project. The system comprises of eight thick-walled hydro accumulators, each having a capacity of 120 cubic metres. During operation, the accumulators are filled with boric acid solution designated for core cooling. The body of each hydro accumulator is composed of three shells, each weighing 15.5 tonnes. Assembled with the in-vessel and bottom components, a passive core flooding system accumulator weighs about 77 tonnes. Light water reactors are the most used at nuclear power generation plants and it is known as conventional technology too. The nuclear power plant at Ishwardi in Pabna will have two power units, each having 1,200 megawatts of capacity, and the first unit of the plant is scheduled to come into operation by October 2024. The power units will be equipped with both active and passive safety systems, including Molten Core Catcher. Latest 3+ generation Russian VVER 1200 reactors will be used in the first ever nuclear power plant of Bangladesh. Atomenergomash is the single-source manufacturer for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant reactor hall and a supplier for most of the turbine island equipment.

Eighty five years after Hermann Weyl, a physicist and mathematician, proposed Weyl fermions, a massless particle that also carried an electric charge, a team of scientists led by a Bangladeshi has found its existence.The team at the Princeton University in the USA, led by Zahid Hasan, made the groundbreaking discovery while the journal Science published the results of their research in detail. In a telephone conversation with the Prothom Alo, Zahid mentioned that this discovery will usher in a new era of electronics where the main features will be speedy and accurate. When asked how different the devices in the new era will be, Zahid said, “For example, the mobile phones made using this technology will be less susceptible to heat after longer use. Because, this particle has no mass and it does not wander around like electrons.” “A Weyl semimetal is a crystal which hosts Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles and admits a topological classification that protects Fermi arc surface states on the boundary of a bulk sample. This unusual electronic structure has deep analogies with particle physics and leads to unique topological properties,” Zahid’s team said in the abstract of the paper. “We report the experimental discovery of a Weyl semimetal, TaAs. Using photoemission spectroscopy, we directly observe Fermi arcs on the surface, as well as the Weyl fermion cones and Weyl nodes in the bulk of TaAs single crystals. We find that Fermi arcs terminate on the Weyl nodes, consistent with their topological character. Our work opens the field for the experimental study of Weyl fermions in physics and materials science,” it added. “For years, scientists thought neutrinos were Weyl fermions. However, in 1998, physicists discovered neutrinos do have mass and the hunt for Weyl fermions began,” Zahid said. “These results are very exciting for me personally, since I've been involved significantly in the theoretical discovery of Weyl semimetals a few years ago,” said physicist Anton Burkov at the University of Waterloo in an interview of international journal IEEE Spectrum. “It’s very exciting to finally see them discovered experimentally in real materials.” The team of researchers led by physicist Zahid Hasan has detected Weyl fermions within large crystals and also observed that the fermions can only exist within the crystals. However, Zahid thinks they might have to wait around 10 to 20 years for the new era electronics. Graphene has already received vast popularity as an element of new era electronics. People have been producing transistor, optical photo sensor and nanosensor using graphene for a long time. But producing graphene is a troublesome task. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 was awarded jointly to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for the invention of graphene. Prof Arshad Momen, chairman of Dhaka University’s Theoretical Physics department told Prothom Alo, “Weyl semimetal could be used for serving those purposes which are being done by graphene. But, graphene is tough to be produced as it is two-dimensional. In comparison to graphene, Weyl fermion is easy to be produced and changed as it is three-dimensional.” “It looks more attractive to me to hear the existence of Weyl fermion rather than its usages. Echoing Einstein, I can say God has used a wonderful mathematical concept in nature,” Arshad Momen added. Zahid Hasan is the eldest son of lawyer father Rahmat Ali and housewife mother Nadira Begum. He has a younger brother and daughter. He passed his SSC from Dhanmondi Government Boys' High School and HSC from Dhaka College with great results. Zahid studied at Texas University in Austin, USA where he worked under Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg. Steven inspired Zahid to work on experiment-based physics. Later, he started working at Princeton University as a physics teacher. He is now a professor of physics at Princeton University. Hamstrung by US and Israeli alliance it has become a new milking cow for Western military hardware manufacturers who are using their servile agents in India to create a big fear factor in Indian society about the threat from China. From banning of Chinese origin mobile apps to boycott of Chinese products they are going backwards daily. China does not have to defeat India militarily. It will just buy India out of everything. There is no international law that says forests and jungles cannot exist within 150 yards of the no man's land. I don't know where these people get such references. If they illegally clear forests and jungles it will cause ecological damage and the fact that several endangered species reside in the border areas of the two countries this is a very serious threat. Imagine they went ahead with the project 4 years ago, it would've been almost half done at this point and in the next 5 years would've become operational (given that there are no delays) the new airport itself would've eased more congestion in Dhaka than the Metrorail itself (people travelling from Banani-Gulshan-Dhanmondi to Uttara in the morning can testify to that). Pair that up with the new Padma bridge and you get one of the most efficient airport in Bangladesh history. With Biman's extended fleet, we'd be flying to more destinations directly than we could ever imagine.
