Bangladesh most expensive country to live in South Asia

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is the world’s most affordable country to live in
According to a report from CEOWORLD magazine, Bangladesh is the most expensive country in South Asia and Switzerland is officially the world's most expensive nation to live in.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is the world’s most affordable country to live in, followed by Afghanistan, India, Syria, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tunisia, the report added.
European countries were prominent on the most expensive list. Of the top-twenty nations, nine were in Europe, five in Asia, one in North America, one in Africa, two in the Caribbean, and two in Oceania.
Norway ranks second in the list of the world’s most expensive countries to live, followed by Iceland, Japan, Denmark, Bahamas, Luxembourg, Israel, Singapore, and South Korea.
A little further down the list one will find the United States in the 20th position, the United Kingdom in 27th, Saudi Arabia in 57th, and Russia in 82nd.
CEOWORLD magazine's rankings are based on five major metrics -- cost of living, rent, groceries, eating out and purchasing power.
To identify the world’s most and least expensive countries to live in, CEOWORLD magazine collected and reviewed data from dozens of studies, numbers of consumer price index, cost of Living Index, and numerous national and international media reports.
These data are then compiled into an index, using the notoriously expensive city of New York City (NYC) as a benchmark. New York was given an index score of 100.
So a country with a score higher than 100 is more expensive than New York, while below signals less expensive. As a reference point, the average score for Germany was 65.26, making it the 29th most expensive country to live in.

Bangladesh's defence budget is 1.2% of GDP, its the second lowest in the region after Bhutan.

I don't expect the defence budget to rise abnormally becausee 60% of the budget is dedicated towards salaries of personnel and only a small armount goes towards defence purchases. Most of the purchases are made through special allocations not covered by the official defence budget.

There are only 3 MiG-29Bs and 1 MiG-29UB remaining in the country with the forming having actual BVR AAM firing capability. Bangladesh has not been this vulnerable since a very long time. If Myanmar wanted to attack they would have done so. The fact that they don't want a physical war with Bangladesh. They already succeeded in their plan to expel most of the Rohingya's out of their country. Their main threat is the rise of the Arakan Army.

BGB is the first line of defence for Bangladesh. While it operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs it is a war capable organisation meant to be seconded to the Army during any conflict.
BGB having over 70,000 strong force is mostly ill-equipped to fight any conventional war beyond holding rear lines. The recent exercises with the Army is telling of the serious need to focus on strengthening this first line of defence. It lacks adequete training, skilled manpower, modern weapons and advanced infrastructure to fight at a level against regional foes.

‘Rohingya drug dealer’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

An unidentified Rohingya man, suspected of being a drug dealer, was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila on Friday morning.
Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of Teknaf BGB-2, said they had been tipped off about a yaba smuggling bid.
“One of our teams took position at Jadimora mosque area in the upazila around 5am. Some people, carrying sacks, opened fire on BGB as soon as they saw the border guards,” he said.
After a skirmish, BGB found an unidentified man injured with gunshot wounds at the spot. He was taken to Teknaf Health Complex.
“Doctors there gave him first aid and recommended shifting him to the Sadar Hospital for better treatment,” Lt col Faisal said. “The man succumbed to his injuries at the district hospital.”
BGB members recovered a locally-made gun, bullet and 130,000 Yaba pills from the spot.

The Whidbey Island-class is an attractive propositon for the Bangladesh Navy. Introduced to fleet service in 1985, this class of ship features a large well deck for the transport of United States Marine Corps (USMC) vehicles and a large flight deck for the landing of helicopters or V-22 Ospreys. The well deck was designed to hold four LCAC hovercraft, five if the vehicle ramp is raised, for landing Marines. Recent deployments have instead filled the well deck with a combination of LCU(s), AAVs, Tanks, LARCs and other USMC vehicles and gear. The Whidbey Island class of ship also uniquely benefits from multiple cranes and a shallow draft that further make it ideal for participating in amphibious operations.
By 2014 all ships of the class underwent upgrades to extend service life to 44 years. Major elements of the upgrade package include diesel engine improvements, fuel and maintenance savings systems, engineering control systems, increased air conditioning and chill water capacity, and replacement of air compressors. The ships also replaced steam systems with all-electric functionality that will decrease maintenance effort and expense.

After ICJ ruling, Myanmar denies genocide against Rohingya
In a statement, government fails to use word 'Rohingya' and rejects accusations of genocide after case at top UN court.
But a statement released by Myanmar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was "important for Myanmar that Court [ICJ] reaches a factually correct decision on the merits of the case", and condemned human rights organisations that it accused of presenting a "distorted picture" of the situation in Rakhine.
Those groups, the statement said, had "affected Myanmmar bilateral relations with several countries" and hampered efforts for "sustainable development" in the northwest province.
While acknowledging "war crimes had occurred", the statement said "there has been no genocide in Rakhine."
While defending her country at the ICJ in December, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in a 30-minute speech, failed to use the word "Rohingya" once.
Critics said her refusal to use the word was part of Myanmar's attempt to strip the minority of their identity and rights.
Again on Thursday, the word "Rohingya" was absent from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement.
'A great day for hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas'
The ICJ case was filed by Muslim-majority The Gambia, which had asked the court to impose emergency measures following the Myanmar army's violent 2017 crackdown that forced around 740,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.
The Hague-based court, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, ordered Myanmar to take urgent and "provisional measures" to protect its Rohingya population from genocide.
Provisional measures are steps aimed at preventing further harm, and come as the first step in the legal case.
Legal experts have applauded the court's decision.
Reed Brody, a commissioner at the International Commission of Jurists who was instrumental in the prosecution of the former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre, told Al Jazeera: "This is a great day for the hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas who have been displaced, killed and raped. The UN's highest court has recognised their suffering."
The ICJ's orders are legally binding.
Brody said the fact that the decision was unanimous would add weight to the court's measures.

BSF ‘apologises’ for killing three Bangladeshis in border firing
India’s Border Security Force or BSF has “apologised” over the deaths of three Bangladeshis in firing by its personnel, the Border Guard Bangladesh says.
The BGB says it “condemned” the killings and called for efforts to stop recurrence of such incidents in a flag meeting at the Naogaon border with BSF personnel on Thursday afternoon.
BGB 16 Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Ariful Haque and 159 BSF Battalion Commander Harsha Joshi led their sides in the meeting.
Porsha Police Station OC Shahinul Islam said they had retrieved the body of Mafizul Islam, 35, from the border and sent it to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
The BSF told the BGB that the bodies of Ranjit Kumar, 25, and Kamal Hossain, 32, would be sent back in line with the legal procedure, Lt Col Ariful said.
The victims are from Dighipra village of Porsha.
BSF opened fire on them when the trio and their companions were returning from India with smuggled cattle very early in the morning on Thursday, according to officials and locals.

The Bangladesh and United States are set to sign two important bilateral defence agreements including:
- General Security Of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA)
- Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement (ACSA)
GSOMIA
The GSOMIA is a foundational government-to-government bilateral agreement that will permit greater collaboration and sharing of classified military information in the form of intelligence and classified information US defence equipment.
GSOMIA is a reciprocal, legally-binding agreement that ensures governments understand and commit to protect classified military information at an equivalent level of security.
“It does not obligate or commit governments to share classified information or material, it only ensures equivalent protection of the information if shared,” the official said.
Washington has GSOMIA agreements with 76 partners across the globe, including several countries in South Asia.
GSOMIA serves to strengthen cooperation to advance shared interests of trusted partners. As the US-Bangladesh relationship continues to grow, GSOMIA is essential to enabling the cooperation we both seek.
“For Foreign Military Sales (FMS) or GSOMIA, our security authorities would work closely with your security authorities to develop a security plan and standard operating procedures to implement required security measures.”
ACSA
The purpose of the ACSA is to allow the US and partner nation forces to procure and pay for common types of logistical support, supplies, and services in a way that simplifies cooperation.
“ACSA agreements do not in any way commit a partner nation to military action nor do they authorise the stationing of ships, aircraft, or military personnel in foreign countries.”
“They only serve to simplify the procurement and payment of logistic support, supplies, and services between partner forces,” said the official.
The United States has an ACSA agreement with over 100 countries, including India and Sri Lanka.
As a mutual logistics support agreement, for example, an ACSA could facilitate the transfer of fuel from the Bangladesh military to visiting US naval ships participating in the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise.
“It could also improve the United States’ ability to respond to any potential humanitarian or natural disasters involving Bangladesh and facilitate the transfer of fuel from the US military to Bangladesh naval ships operating outside of their normal areas; thereby eliminating the need to contract with commercial vendors,” the official said to cite an example.

Ctg plane hijacking bid: Polash acted alone, final report says
The Counter Terrorism unit of Chattogam Metropolitan Police on Tuesday submitted its final report before a Chattogram court on the Biman plane hijacking bid, implicating the accused Polash Ahmed.
Inspector Rajesh Barua of the unit, also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, submitted the 308-page final report to the prosecution on Tuesday, after nearly 11 months of investigation.
Polash Ahmed, the hijacker, was killed in a commando operation during the incident in the city’s Shah Amanat International Airport on February 24 last year.
Debabrata Sarker, technology assistant at the Chattogram airport, filed a case the next day with Patenga Police Station accusing Polash.
“After investigating the case and analysing the statements of the witnesses, police primarily found evidence against the slain Polash…,” Inspector Rajesh Barua told The Daily Star, confirming the submission of the final report.
“Police recorded the statements of 79 witnesses, including 22 passengers of the BG-147 flight, and during the investigation, police found that none but Polash Ahmed alias Sakib Hossain was involved in the case,” Rajesh said.
“The charges brought against him were found to be true, but the exact reason behind the aircraft hijacking attempt could not be known as he got killed during the commando operation by Bangladesh Army,” the IO added.
Among the 79 witnesses, seven are officials and staffers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, 19 are relatives and family members of slain Polash, while 26 are officials of law enforcement agencies.
All the witnesses made statements under Section 161 of the Penal Code.
CT sources said the CCTV footage of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and radio conversation between the pilot and the control tower were also submitted along with the final report and other evidences.
Citing the ballistic expert, the IO in the final report said the gun, which was seized from the plane, was a plastic toy gun. It was not possible to install any cartridge in or fire bullets from the toy pistol.
The report also said Polash presented a “suicide bomb” made of plastic pipes, a circuit, LED lights, battery, clips and a black watch before the passengers and also exploded some crackers.
According to the final report, Polash was known an Mahi in Dhaka. He got married to one Meghla in 2014 without consent from his family and the couple had a baby boy. Meghla later divorced Polash as he used to torture her physically and mentally.
In 2016, Polash went to Malaysia but later came back after one month. The report also mentioned that Polash featured in a short-film titled ‘Kobor’ in January 2018.
After releasing the short-film, he got introduced to a film actress Shimla as a film producer and developed a relationship with her.
In the final report, the IO mentioned that Polash got married to Shimla on March 6, 2018 and began living in Banani. His wife was not aware of Polash’s real identity.
After eight months, Shima divorced Polash after learning who he really was.
In the meantime, moneylenders pressured him to pay them back and he went into hiding.
The report also mentioned that Polash confirmed a plane ticket for Chattogram from one ‘Befresh’ air ticket agency on February 23, 2019 and paid through a mobile financial service.
According to the report, on February 24 he went to Dhaka airport using a ride-sharing service and boarded the plane for Chattogram at 5:13pm. Seventeen minutes after taking off, he changed his seat from 17-A to 1-D. When the cabin crew requested him to go back to his seat, he started shouting, brandishing the toy pistol and bomb-like object and tried to enter the cockpit.
The report also said Polash told the passengers that the plane was being hijacked and he wanted to talk to the prime minister of Bangladesh, forcing the plane for emergency landing in Chattogram.
After landing, the para-commando team of Bangladesh Army asked him to surrender over loudspeaker but he refused. Later, he got killed in the commando operation, the report added.
