Dark Carnage Posted February 15, 2020 Share Posted February 15, 2020 14 February was the Coast Guard Day. But I did not see any type of celebration this year. Anyone knows why? Also a lot of coast guard ships (I counted 9) are waiting for commissioning, some for around two years. Any reason behind not commissioning? Is there a manpower problem or anything else? Dark Carnage Posted February 16, 2020 Author Share Posted February 16, 2020 Coast Guard to get chopper, ships: home minister Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Saturday that state-of-art ships, hovercrafts, drones, maritime patrol aircrafts and choppers would be given to the Bangladesh Coast Guard in near future. ‘The current government has taken various initiatives to make the Bangladesh Coast Guard stronger gradually,’ the home minister told a programme at Coast Guard’s Agargaon headquarters marking the 25th rising day of the force. ‘At the same time, the coastal surveillance system will be installed to bring the long coastal belt under monitoring,’ said the minister. Mostafa Kamal Uddin, the senior secretary of public security division of home affairs ministry, and Rear Admiral M Ashraful Haq, the director general of BCG, were present at the programme along with the senior civil and military officials, according to a press release. The minister praised the roles of the coast guard members in protecting the coastal people and maintaining law and order. BCG chief Ashraful Haq said that the force had brought the lifting and robbery along the Chattogram port to an end. . The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia, which popularly known as ReCAAP, has recognised the report, he added. Hovercrafts are definitely for Coastguard. Helicopters are planned for both services. Earlier, rapid response boats were delivered to BCG from Disaster and Relief Ministry funds. Its too expensive, overly complicated and not reliable at all, which is why four of the class are being decommissioned prematurely. Bangladeshi shipyards will build 6 large OPV's, which will help mitigate deep water presence crisis within the BCG. The concept has been developed for the Coast Guard use as a high speed diving boat to carry out sustained diving operation, SAR operations and patrol duties in port areas, outer anchorage and coastal waters. The boat have good sea-keeping ability and shall be able to operate in shallow waters near coasts and beaches. Elite Members Rezwan12 Posted July 11, 2020 Elite Members Share Posted July 11, 2020 More hardware to raise Coast Guard capability Deepak Acharjee After 22 years of the formation of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, the government is planning to arm the paramilitary force to become a full “two-dimensional force” by purchasing an all-weather capable ship, hovercraft, drone, helicopter and maritime patrol aircraft soon. The Coast Guard is also going to install a “long-range identification tracking/ and vessel-trafficking monitoring and information system” to increase its capacity, sources said. Bangladesh Coast Guard authorities have prepared a strategic plan to purchase the heavy military hardware, the sources added. The strategic plan covering short-, mid- and long-term periods would be implemented by 2030. Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The Independent that the government wanted to build a full-fledged force within the shortest possible time and that’s why they were planning to raise its capacity. “We have already enacted the Bangladesh Coast Guard Act 2016 to make it a modern and digital paramilitary coastal force. The required equipment, ships and other vessels would be purchased for this purpose,” he added. A senior official of the Coast Guard disclosed that they needed the required equipment, manpower and money to implement the strategic plan. “So far, we have purchased four offshore patrol vessels, seven inshore patrol vessels, two fast patrol boats, one floating crane and two tug boats for conducting operations along the coast,” he said, adding that they were also going to purchase 12 high speed boats soon. He claimed that they were making a return of Tk. 10 for every Tk. 1 spent by the government on the paramilitary force. The officer said that the force has made seizures worth Tk. 6,800 crore in the past 22 years.“We've also seized various smuggled items worth Tk. 650 crore and 600 smuggled arms. Besides, we've recovered forest assets to the tune of Tk. 90 crore and also arrested 1,500 criminals,” he added. Sources said the coastal force wanted to raise its capacity by setting up an aviation wing with 10 modern helicopters and also run the force under the proposed three regional headquarters within the short-term plan (2015 to 2020). According to the short-term plan, the existing manpower strength of 3,305 would be raised to 6,197. The force will also have three branches, six directorates, three regional headquarters, two more zonal headquarters, one hospital, four composite stations, two pollution control vessels, seven inshore patrol vessels, eight offshore patrol vessels, 38 big high-speed boats and two combat ferry boats. The long-range identification and tracking (LRIT)/vessel-trafficking monitoring system (VTMIS) would be installed for surveillance on ships and other vessels along the coast under the short-term plan. Under the mid-term plan (2020-2025), one aviation wing, one aviation and technical training base each, three more riverine patrol vessels, two more pollution control vessels, 30 more high-speed boats, two water jet scooters, six helicopters and six unmanned aerial vehicles would be procured. During that period, the coastal force will be able to raise its capacity to help the Bangladesh Navy during war or whenever necessary. For the long term (2025-2030), the paramilitary force plans to raise its capacity fully to run a two-dimensional force. The force would carry out surveillance on all maritime areas by installing the long- range identification and tracking (LRIT)/vessel-trafficking monitoring system (VTMIS). The Prime Minister said this while addressing the commissioning programme of two offshore patrol vessels, five in-shore patrol ones, two fast patrol boats and BCG Base Bhola. The programme was held at Coast Guard Berth Patenga while the Prime Minister joined it virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban. Sheikh Hasina asked the Bangladesh Coast Guard members to discharge their responsibilities with patriotism, honesty and faith. "You’ll to pay a special attention [to your duties] so that the good image of the Coast Guard remains unharmed always," she said. The Prime Minister assured the force of all-out cooperation from the government in maintaining its forward march. "I can give you that assurance." She said Narayanganj dockyard and Khulna shipyard, now operating under Bangladesh Navy, are building two inshore patrol vessels, one floating crane, two tugboats and 16 boats. "Soon, these will be inducted in the Coast Guard fleet." Sheikh Hasina mentioned that a dockyard is being prepared in Gajaria for the Coast Guard to increase its capacity of repairing and maintenance. "To enhance the capacity of this force, initiatives have been taken to procure hovercraft, drone, 3500 metric-tonne vessel which can patrol in all weathers. We want to build the Coast Guard as a modern and time befitting force," the Prime Minister said. Terming Bangladesh a land of natural calamities, she said the people of the country have to live facing all these natural adversities. "We’ve to live with these, we’ve to put our attention towards saving the lives of people facing all the odds, we’ve to acquire that capabilities." Hasina said Bangladesh has got a vast ocean boarder which can be utilised for the economic development of the country. "The Bay of Bengal is a very important ocean, trade and commerce of many countries run through this area." Dhaka | Published: 11:06, Dec 09,2020 Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday rescued 19 Bangladeshi fishermen who were stranded in Indian waters in the Bay of Bengal. The fishermen who started from Cox’s Bazar on November 15, were stranded in the sea as their boat ‘Rana’ developed a technical glitch. They were extremely exhausted and had no food left on board. They were provided with first aid, food and water by the Indian Coast Guard. The fishing boat drifted into Indian EEZ due to breakdown in machinery. Bangladesh Coast Guard requested Indian Coast Guard to make necessary arrangements for taking over the stranded fishing boat along with the crew at the pre-designated location in the vicinity of the international maritime boundary line.
