The Walton wonder

The company launched locally made lifts and all-in-one desktops in local markets at half the cost of imported ones

YuqOH5t.jpg

Walton wonder goes global, truly.

In 1997 when five brothers led by eldest one SM Nurul Alam Rezvi started importing black-and-white television sets, they could not imagine that they would become so big and a household name in Bangladesh.

After their success in selling televisions, they began thinking big and set up Walton Hi-Tech Industries in 2006 to manufacture electronics in Bangladesh.

Walton started out with motorcycles and refrigerators, but the motorcycles did not get as much popularity as their refrigerators did.

They stopped producing motorcycles after several years but continued to venture into manufacturing many electronic items and air conditioners and compressors for refrigerators.

The rest is history.

According to Walton, only 14 countries can make compressors for refrigerators.

In its steady journey of over two decades, Walton has left behind many international brands in the domestic market.

Now it eyes export of "Made In Bangladesh" products to the United States and India.

Yesterday, it began exporting smart phones to the US and air conditioners and refrigerators to India.

The company also introduced its own lifts and all-in-one desktops in local markets at half the cost of imported ones.

At present, Walton holds almost three-fourths of the total share of the local refrigerator market. It has also gained a significant presence in the television and air conditioner markets, with 40 percent and 22 percent shares respectively.

The local brand now eyes a one-fourth share in the domestic market for lifts even though it's a new entrant to this market segment.

Walton is a company that has been working to ease people's life as well as create employment opportunities in Bangladesh, said SM Nurul Alam Rezvi, vice chairman of Walton Hi-Tech Industries.

"Apart from supplying high standard consumer goods to the domestic electronic market, Walton has ensured over 25 thousand direct and about 1 lakh indirect employment for people. Now we are exporting our products abroad," he said.

Walton's marketing network spans the country, with more than 350 sales points called Walton Plaza and over 25 thousand dealers.

The company currently manufactures almost all types of electronic and electric goods, including fridges, television, air conditioners, desktops and laptops, handsets, home appliances, cables, chemical products, lifts, and even LED bulbs.

Officials say, Walton manufactures everything necessary to produce a refrigerator while raw materials are imported.

Walton has also started building computer motherboards.

Uday Hakim, Walton's chief executive officer, said the firm itself designs and develops its own products, with a strong research and development wing.

The journey abroad

Walton now has focused on making a strong foothold in the global market. At present, it exports products to 30 countries, with its biggest market in Middle East and Africa.

Besides, it sends goods to some European and Saarc countries too.

Recently, it has signed a deal with a US company to export "Made In Bangladesh" smart handsets to that country.

In order to sell 26 thousand units of air conditioners and 1 lakh pieces of fridges in the Indian markets for the next two years, Walton has also inked deals with Korean giant Hyundai and Indian Reliance.

Walton has also signed an agreement to sell Walton products on Amazon.

Walton will become one of the top five brands in the world by 2030, said Ashraful Alam, managing director of the company.

Walton's factory

Walton has set up all of its plants at Kaliakoir in Gazipur at the outskirts of Dhaka.

Walton Headquarters, as the factory is named, has been established on 764 acres of land and divided into three divisions – Walton Hi-Tech Industries, Walton Micro Corporation and Walton Digi-Tech Limited.

Walton Hi-Tech Industries' top product is refrigerators apart from a good number of air conditioners and lifts.

Digi-Tech produces cell phones, computers and accessories.

"Dedication and hard labour over these years have put us in this position. We will be Bangladesh's top company in the future," said Ashraful Islam, managing director of Walton.

Explaining the reason behind Walton products' growing popularity, he said, "We always try to produce goods according to people's demand, taste and necessity and keep the prices affordable."

Star Business Report

Walton has expanded its export basket further as the local electronics giant started shipments of made in Bangladesh compressors for refrigerators and air conditioners to Turkey.

"We aim to export one million units of compressors to some African, Middle East countries and Turkey by 2021," said Meer Muzahedin Islam, chief executive officer of Walton Compressor.

The number would hit five million by 2025, as some more export destinations will be explored by the time, he said.

"The company was busy producing compressors for the local market until last year. Now we are trying to serve the foreign nations, as we have already increased our capacity to produce four million compressors a year."

On July 7, the compressors were sent to Turkish company Kargi, which imports, exports and markets hi-tech spare parts for domestic and industrial products throughout Turkey and also abroad, especially in Europe.

Walton's International Business Unit President Edward Kim and Kargi's Managing Director Emin Kargi signed a deal in this regard, making the Turkish brand a distributor of Walton products in the transcontinental Eurasian nation.

"The initiative will pave the way for the expansion of our compressor market not only in Turkey but also across Europe as Turkey is being known as the business hub of Eurasia," said Kim.

Walton is also working to produce a new series of compressors equipped with latest technologies, Islam said.

"The commercial production of that series will increase the present export volumes of Walton compressors by several times."

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi inaugurated Walton's compressor export through a virtual press conference, arranged by the local brand at its corporate headquarters in the capital.

Walton now has presence in over 20 countries around the world.

Business Desk | Published: 22:20, Sep 20,2020

Bangladeshi electronics brand Walton is registering remarkable success in expanding the export market of its locally produced inverter technology’s air conditioner, said a press release issued by the brand.

Walton AC executive director and chief executive officer Md Tanvir Rahman said that the Made in Bangladesh’ labelled and Walton produced Inverter ACs were luring buyers in exporting countries and the export demand for Walton ACs was rising.

With the resumption of import-export activities after lifting of lockdowns in different countries following the Covid-19 outbreak, he said that Walton had shipped out several consignments of AC exports to Yemen, East Timor, Nepal and India.

Walton is manufacturing air conditioners in the names of renowned electronics brands of different countries in accordance with their requirements under the Original Equipment Manufacturer system.

Walton Group IBU president Edward Kim said that Walton saw a promising international market as it had great competitiveness in terms of products’ technology, global standard and price compared to other global brands.

He also said that as many global players were recently trying to shift their sourcing place from China to other countries, Walton in Bangladesh had significantly emerged as a very important and sustainable business partner for them in Bangladesh.

Every air conditioner produced by Walton is released on the market after obtaining quality control certification from international standard testing lab NUSDAT-Universal Testing Lab, the company said.

Walton grows riding on TV and AC business

Over the last four consecutive financial years till FY21, AC business jumped by 273% to Tk349.56 crore and TV sales grew by 112% to Tk784.18 crore during the period

infographics_walton-1-01.png?itok=0xxruk

With a 66% share of the refrigerator market already in its hand, Walton is now inching towards sealing the leading positions in television and air conditioner sales as well.

Over the last four consecutive financial years till FY21, AC business jumped by 273% to Tk349.56 crore and TV sales grew by 112% to Tk784.18 crore during the period, according to Walton's audited financial statements.

Even the 66-day shutdown could not dampen its growth in TV and AC businesses – 93% and 55% respectively in FY20. But the country's electronics and home appliance giant registered a 39% fall in its refrigerator sales that year.

On the other hand, Walton's nearest competitor, Singer, engaged in electronics and home appliance business since 1979, suffered losses owing to the pandemic.

Firoj Alam, chief marketing officer at Walton, told The Business Standard that Walton has put its foothold in the global market after meeting local demand.

With a vision "Go Global 2030", Walton wants to become one of the best global electronics brands by the next nine years, said Walton Hi-Tech Industries' Managing Director Golam Murshed at a roadshow, which was organised by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission in Switzerland on 22 September.

TV market

According to the research firm LightCastle Partner, the country's TV market stands at Tk3,500 crore at the end of the 2020, with Walton holding a market share of 27%.

Apart from Walton, other local companies are Rangs, Vision, Singer and MyOne, whereas foreign brands include Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Philips and LG.

At present, Walton's TV production capacity is 8 lakh units annually. It also exports TV to European countries such as Romania, Poland and Greece.

Firoj Alam said, TV export is easier than that of refrigerators. So, the company is trying to increase TV exports to European countries.

AC market

Increased urbanisation, increased global warming and increased purchasing power are the factors driving the growth in the country's AC industry. In the summer season, the highest sales of AC are generally witnessed.

Currently, 25 local and foreign companies are selling ACs in the country.

In the last five years, AC demand has increased at the rate of 20%-25% per annum. The current AC market size stands at Tk2,000 crore, while local companies have a 40% market share, as per the LightCastle Partner.

The major player in this sector is Esquire Electronics, which offers AC from the General brand. Its total market share is 35%.

Since 2010, Walton has started manufacturing and assembling ACs at affordable prices and its market share stands at 17%. At present, its production capacity is 1.50 lakh units annually.

Future plan

Walton made a Tk5,000 crore new investment plan last year. It has submitted its plan to Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority to acquire 300 acres of land at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Chattogram. The newly-built facility will be its second unit along with its current manufacturing facility in Chandra, Gazipur. The investment will be made over a period of eight years.

Stock performance

Walton got listed on the stock exchanges in 2020. Its share price fell by 1.59% and closed at Tk1,296 at the end of the Sunday's trading session.

For the last fiscal year, it declared a 250% cash dividend to general shareholders and a 170% cash dividend to sponsors and directors.

In the last fiscal year, its earnings per share was Tk54.21, which was 124% higher than in the previous year.

Out of the total share, its sponsors and directors hold 99.03% shares, institutional investors have 0.39%, foreign investors have 0.10% and general investors have 0.48%.

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission directed the company to offload 10% share in the capital market.  Following the commission's directive, Walton's share price dropped by 16% within four days. Due to the bad impact of the securities regulator's decision, the company seeks more time two offload the share.

"Economic development would be accelerated if domestic products were given priority at the government and institutional levels," said SM Mahbubul Alam, director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited.

Major General Ibne Fazal Shayekhuzzaman, engineer-in-chief of the Military Engineer Services (MES) of Bangladesh Army, said that Walton has been contributing to the economic development of Bangladesh by manufacturing import substitute electronics products.

“They need to be given priority in the country’s economic development and that needs to be ensured at all levels, both individual and institutional,” he noted.

The Bangladesh Army’s engineer-in-chief made the remark after a visit to Walton Hi-Tech Park at Chandra in Gazipur on December 7.

Led by him, a team of 76 engineers of the Bangladesh Army visited the country’s electronics giant Walton factory aimed at viewing the locally finished electronics goods’ state-of-the-art manufacturing progress and also the real progress of the local hi-tech industries.

Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited (WHIL) Director SM Mahbubul Alam were present during the factory visit by the MES delegations.

Among others, WHIL’s Deputy Managing Director Alamgir Alam Sarkar, Senior Executive Directors Col. (Retd) Shahadat Alam, Md Sirajul Islam, Tanvir Rahman, Yusuf Ali, Sohel Rana and Yasir Al Imran; Executive Directors Rakib Uddin, Tanvir Anjum, Mohsin Ali Mollah; Media Advisor Enayet Ferdous and some other senior officials were also present.

After the factory visit, Major General Ibne Fazal Shayekhuzzaman said: “Today, I am very surprised visiting Walton factory. They have a vision with great human values and foresight. I think if I could come to the Walton factory three years ago, it would be much better. I will try to send new engineers who will join MES to visit the Walton factory.

He added: “Walton Factory is a complete package. Walton's overall growth is highly logical. This is because of their advanced research activities that everyone should follow.

SM Mahbubul Alam believes Walton is a name of trust for buyers at home and abroad due to its high-quality products. We recently participated in the Sodex International Trade Fair in Turkey.

There we have received a huge response from global buyers for Walton products made in Bangladesh, especially the groundbreaking innovations like Walton's offline voice command or talking air conditioner have amazed them.

Inviting government and institutional buyers to visit the Walton factory, he said Walton has the capability to manufacture customized products as per the demand.

Like the ready-made garment sector, the electronics and technology industries also have the opportunity and potential to become one of the top markets in the world.

SM Mahbubul Alam further said that economic development would be accelerated if domestic products were given priority at the government and institutional levels.

He also added: “Employment will increase and will be easier to capture the global market. We want no one from Bangladesh to go abroad as a worker. On the contrary, even better workplaces should be created in the country. Foreigners have to come to work in Bangladesh. That is how we will build the country. It will be easier when we love the products of the country, use them ourselves.”

Upon arrival at the factory premises, the guests first take a tour of Walton's well-equipped product display centre. Later, they observed the production process of Walton's refrigerators, air conditioners, VRFs, elevators and elevators.
