STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex), the state-owned gas and oil exploration entity, has discovered new gas reserves in one of the development wells at Srikail gas field in Comilla.

Talking to The Independent, Alamgir Hossain, general manager of Bapex, said that they have found new gas reserves at a depth of 3,065 metres.

The official said they got the confirmation about the gas at about 8 pm yesterday.

“We have received 2200 PSI pressure in the exploration oil,” Hossain said adding that an estimate of the possible gas reserve in yet to be made. “We need a complete analysis to disclose information about the actual gas reserve.”

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) on Tuesday announced the discovery of a new gas field at Srikail in Cumilla's Muradnagar upazila.

Drilling began at Srikail East-1 gas field, the country's 28th gas field, on October 28 last year.

"After four months, Bapex found a gas layer on Tuesday night," said Mohsinur Rahman, in-charge of the gas field.

Bapex is considering the discovery as a ray of hope amid news that the country's gas reserve is depleting fast, he said.

Bapex, the state-owned gas and oil exploration entity, says it expects to produce 20 million cubic feet per day from the gas field located 3,065 metres below the surface.

An analysis is being conducted to estimate the gas reserve and the pressure of water and gas in the field, Mohsinur said.

The production work will start after a five-day experiment.

Currently, the gas pressure is 2,000 PSI, which is comparatively higher than other gas fields, he added.

Bapex announces discovery of new gas field in B’baria

United News of Bangladesh . Brahmanbaria | Published: 12:24, Mar 05,2020

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited has announced the discovery of a new gas field in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria, a day after finding another gas reserve in Cumilla.

Engineer Syed Mohammad Kabir, a project director, said the primary digging work of the gas field under Srikail East-1 gas field was completed on Wednesday evening.

Thirteen million cubic feet gas can be produced from the gas field per day which will be added to the national grid, he said.

Primary experimental work began on Tuesday and the authorities concerned said gas can be lifted from 3,054 to 3,082 metres below the surface.

Digging work of two gas fields — Salda North-1 and Srikail East-1 — has started under the government’s Rupkolpo-1 project, and the expenditure of Tk 162 crore will be provided from the gas development fund, said Kabir.

The authorities concerned of the project did not lift gas from Salda North-1 field as it is found non-profitable, he said.

Officials of the project said the experimental work of the gas field on 203 acres of land was done. Gas will be provided to the national grid through process plant after installing a 10km pipeline.

The drilling work under the surface was done in vertical process and the logging work of the gas field was also done.

Earlier, Bapex announced discovery of a new gas field in Srikail of Cumilla’s Muradnagar upazila on Tuesday.

Bangladesh announces discovery of 28th gas field

Published:  August 09, 2021 21:00:12 | Updated:  August 10, 2021 09:15:09

State-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration Company (BAPEX) has discovered a new gas field in the Sylhet region of the country.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid formally announced the discovery of the country's 28th gas field in Zakiganj of Sylhet, reports Xinhua.

Hamid said BAPEX made the discovery in June but refrained from making a formal announcement for a while as it decided to assess first the prospects of recovering gas from the new field.

He said 68 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas has been found in the newly-discovered gas field.

"The new gas field has a possible reserve of 68 bcf of gas worth around Tk 12.76 billion (about $148 million)," said Hamid.

He said BAPEX will soon conduct a 3D survey to assess further the real position of the fossil fuel in the virgin field from where gas can be extracted up to 13 years at 10 million cubic feet per day.

Bangladesh previously discovered 27 gas fields, with the latest one in Bheduria of Bhola, in the southern part of the country, discovered in October 2017.

In the past decade, BAPEX discovered over a dozen small- to medium-sized gas fields.

The biggest field so far is in Bhola, an offshore island covering an area of 3,403.48 sq km and about 205 km south of the capital Dhaka, which boasts hundreds of billions of cubic feet reserves.

According to Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation's official estimates, the previously-discovered 27 gas fields have been found with a cumulative original recoverable gas reserve of around 28 trillion cubic feet.
