Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) war readiness

BGB is the first line of defence for Bangladesh. While it operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs it is a war capable organisation meant to be seconded to the Army during any conflict.

BGB having over 70,000 strong force is mostly ill-equipped to fight any conventional war beyond holding rear lines. The recent exercises with the Army is telling of the serious need to focus on strengthening this first line of defence. It lacks adequete training, skilled manpower, modern weapons and advanced infrastructure to fight at a level against regional foes.

Your facts are true in all terms, however; given the lack of manpower and inadequate weapons they can still hold their ground and give a good bashing to the monkeys and bhindians around us. But certainly time has come to focus on this rather neglected first line of defence, period.

It's better late then never. 

The government should start paying attention to the BGB and the Army should step in and give their BGB brothers combat training. They should increase their salaries too, we need them now more than ever.

I think the government is now looking into the problems. Recently got two mi-171Es,ATGMs and many more modern equipments coming. And don't forget the upcoming Smart Border Management system

Lack of equipment can be solved quickly, it's the lack of training that is alarming.

BGB shares some of the same trainings of army. Wat types of trainings u find BGB lacks?

They don't train nearly as frequently as the army does.

ঢাকা: আন্তঃসীমান্ত অপরাধ দমন, প্রতিবেশী দেশ থেকে অস্ত্র, বিস্ফোরক, ইয়াবাসহ বিভিন্ন মাদক ও চোরাচালানরোধ এবং মানবপাচার প্রতিরোধে দ্রুত ও কার্যকরভাবে টহল পরিচালনার জন্য বর্ডার গার্ড বাংলাদেশে (বিজিবি) যুক্ত হলো অল টেরেইন ভেহিক্যাল (এটিভি)।

বৃহস্পতিবার (০৯ জুলাই)  বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন বিজিবির জনসংযোগ কর্মকর্তা মো: শরিফুল ইসলাম।

তিনি বলেন, ভারত ও মিয়ানমারের সঙ্গে ৪ হাজার ৪২৭ কি.মি সীমান্তের ৩২৮ কিলোমিটার এলাকা বিশেষ ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে। এ সকল বিশেষ ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ ও স্পর্শকাতর সীমান্ত এলাকায় নিশ্ছিদ্র নিরাপত্তা, নজরদারি এবং আন্তঃরাষ্ট্রীয় অপরাধ মোকাবিলায় এলাকাগুলোতে সর্বাধুনিক প্রযুক্তির ‘স্মার্ট ডিজিটাল সার্ভেইল্যান্স অ্যান্ড ট্যাকটিকাল বর্ডার রেসপন্স সিস্টেম’ স্থাপন ও সম্প্রসারণের জন্য বিজিবি কর্তৃক উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়। ইতোমধ্যে যশোর জেলার পুটখালী এবং কক্সবাজার জেলার টেকনাফ সীমান্তের ২৩ কিলোমিটার এলাকায় সার্ভেইল্যান্স সিস্টেম স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। তাছাড়া, টেকনাফ সীমান্তের দমদমিয়া থেকে উনচিপ্রাং, উনচিপ্রাং থেকে পালংখালী, পালংখালী থেকে বাইশফাঁড়ি পর্যন্ত ৪৫ কিলোমিটার, নওগাঁ জেলার হাপানিয়া সীমান্তে ১৫ কিলোমিটার, দিনাজপুর জেলার হিলি থেকে কয়া পর্যন্ত ১৫ কিলোমিটার, চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জ জেলার মাসুদপুর থেকে কয়া সীমান্ত পর্যন্ত ১৫ কিলোমিটারসহ সর্বমোট ৯০ কিলোমিটার এলাকায় সার্ভেইল্যান্স সিস্টেম স্থাপনের কাজ প্রায় শেষ পর্যায়ে। দেশের সার্বিক আইন শৃঙ্খলা ও অর্থনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতা বজায় রাখার পাশাপাশি রাষ্ট্রীয় নিরাপত্তার কর্মকাণ্ডকে আরও সুসংগঠিত ও সময়োপযোগী করার নিমিত্তে বিভিন্ন এলাকায় স্থাপিত ‘স্মার্ট ডিজিটাল সার্ভেইল্যান্স অ্যান্ড ট্যাকটিকাল বর্ডার রেসপন্স সিস্টেম’ থেকে প্রাপ্ত তথ্যের আলোকে দ্রুত রেসপন্স প্রদানের জন্য দ্রুততার সঙ্গে ঘটনাস্থলে বিজিবি সদস্যদের প্রেরণ এবং দুর্গম ও অপ্রচলিত সড়কসমূহে নিয়মিত টহল কার্যক্রম পরিচালনার জন্য বিজিবিতে অল টেরেইন ভেহিক্যাল (এটিভি) সংযোজন করা হয়েছে।

তিনি আরও বলেন, অল টেরেইন ভেহিক্যালগুলো কর্দমাক্ত সরু রাস্তা, বালুময় চরাঞ্চল, খাল-বিলসহ বিভিন্ন জলাশয়, পাহাড়ি খাড়া রাস্তা এবং যেকোনো দুর্গম রাস্তায় চলাচলের জন্য উপযুক্ত। এছাড়াও ওজনে হালকা হওয়ার কারণে বিশেষ আভিযানিক অপারেশন পরিচালনার ক্ষেত্রে বর্ণিত এগুলো হেলিকপ্টারের মাধ্যমে নির্ধারিত স্থানে হেলিড্রপ করা সম্ভব। বিজিবির এই সক্ষমতা আন্তঃসীমান্ত অপরাধ দমনে (অস্ত্র, ইয়াবাসহ বিভিন্ন মাদক চোরাচালান ও মানবপাচার প্রতিরোধ ইত্যাদি) সক্রিয় ভূমিকা রাখার পাশাপাশি সীমান্ত হত্যা হ্রাসেও কার্যকরী ভূমিকা রাখবে

BGB gets riot control vehicles, APCs

Sophisticated Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and riot control vehicles were included in Border Guard Bangladesh's (BGB's) arsenal yesterday to enhance its operational activities and capacity building.

In addition to ensuring its own security, riot control vehicles have been added to BGB for effectively maintaining the country's internal law and order and controlling domestic riots, BGB said in a release.

Through the efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and overall supervision of the BGB director general, the inclusion of these APCs and riot control vehicles has greatly enhanced the capacity of BGB, the release added.

BGB has already started operational activities to ensure proper and maximum use of the sophisticated equipment.

"As a result, BGB is able to play a more dynamic role in the overall security of the border as well as in controlling the internal law and order situation and protecting the sovereignty of the motherland," BGB said in the release.

Sheikh Hasina asks BGB to curb smuggling, protect independence

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday asked the Border Guard Bangladesh to restrict smuggling apart from protecting the country’s independence and sovereignty.

‘You’ve to love your country, its people and work for people,’ she said.

The prime minister said this while virtually attending the course-completion parade of BGB 95th batch from her official residence Ganobhaban. The parade was held at BGB training Centre and College at Satkania, Chattogram.

She asked the BGB personnel to discharge their duties and responsibilities adopting mentality of service towards the country and nation.

Mentioning that discipline is very important for any force, Sheikh Hasina said, ‘Always remember that discipline is most important for any force.’

Hasina said that the country had been liberated with an ideology in mind and all would have to uphold that.

She asked the BGB personnel to carry out the orders of seniors and be fearless in discharging duties, and work having sympathy for juniors. ‘All have to work so that the country can be developed further in the future.’

Hasina asked the newly-recruited BGB personnel to perform the basic four principles of the force — morale, brotherhood, discipline and skill — with sincerity and honesty.

She said the Awami League government was continuing its efforts to establish BGB as an international standard and modern border force through its development and modernisation. ‘For that we’ve adopted the Border Guard Bangladesh Vision 2041.’

‘Recently, we’ve turned BGB as a three-dimensional force. BGB now attains its capacity to discharge its duties in water, land and air,’ she said.

She said that the government had taken a plan to recruit more 15,000 manpower in phases. Besides as part of the smart border management ultramodern surveillance equipment, ATV and modern APC, helicopter, vehicle scanner and speedboat has been inducted apart from installing new BOPs and BSPs.

Talking about the second wave of COVID-19, she urged all to stay alert about it and follow the health guidelines to stay safe from this deadly disease.

She reiterated that the government had made advance payment to get vaccines for coronavirus to protect people from the fatal disease.

The prime minister recalled the heroic contributions of the BGB, the then East Pakistan Rifles and Bangladesh Rifles, members towards spreading the proclamation of independence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 25, 1971 and in the Liberation War.

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan and senior secretary of public security division of home ministry Mostafa Kamal Uddin also spoke virtually at the programme from the Home Ministry.

BGB director general Major General Md Shafeenul Islam delivered the welcome speech.

The BGB DG handed over various awards on behalf of the prime minister among the trainees for their outstanding performance during the training programme.

BGB is not a 'war fighting' force. Its only designed to hold the border for a few hours until the Army reaches the area of operations and replaces them. They usually withdraw to the rear to protect supply lines, guard critical infrastructure, train up militia and perform law enforcement tasks to prevent decay of law and order in the area of conflict.

Some units of the BGB have ATGMs but those are for quick responses to border clashes rather than full scale war.

If I were a country's defense minister, I will revamp our BGB through constitutional amendments so that they can work hand-to-hand, shoulder-to-shoulder with AFD in respond to external aggression.
