Terminal 3 will be built on the south side of the airport’s main terminal at an estimated cost of Tk 214 billion, of which the government will provide Tk 50 billion, while the rest will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Sumsung yesterday disclosed the information in a press release. About 20 million passengers will be able to travel through the airport annually after the completion of Terminal 3 likely by 2023. Samsung C&T Corporation has received a budget of Tk 50 billion ($1.6 Billion) for the project. Darth Nihilus
The new terminal sounds like a short term solution to Dhaka's problem. The 20 million passenger capacity may be able to handle the flow till 2030. A new airport needs to be made so that it can handle the projected passenger volume for the later years. As far as I've heard, they were supposed to build another airport on the outskirts of Dhaka. This would've helped with the traffic flow and would've enabled an easier move of industry outside Dhaka, decentralizing the city a lot.

I believe a new airport will be built at purbachal, just outside of Dhaka. They're apparently going to build a whole city there with skyscrapers, underground electric cables, new cricket stadium and other facilities. Salahuddin
They should build a airport district, where there only buildings such as food, maintence and other logistics support is located near the airport. As for the terminal, they should had just build a new airport instead of a third terminal which may cause more traffic chaos

Didn't they plan for another area after that? I may be wrong but didn't they have an alternate plan for something close to the Padma bridge? As far as I remember, that place was uninhabited hence wouldn't have problems with land aquisition. I think AL's promises for the last election was also about an airport

I see some Pakistanis running around shouting Lahore is safer than Dhaka. Funny I never saw car bombs in Dhaka, cars burnt down to the metal frame. Xuhayr
How can the additional passenger flow be handled without increasing extra runways, hangers, parkings or controllers, and just the terminal? Or at those being planned too?

They should prohibit family members of passengers from pooling outside the airport gates, this is especially true for Chittagong's airport. Just outside the entrance to the airport there's 3000 people at any given time sticking to the steel barricade looking at people going in and going out. Surely it creeps foreigners out. A second runway might not be necessary as the issue with current airport is a lack of parking space and not cuz of the lack of a second runway. Mumbai airport has only one active runway at any given time despite being over twice the size of Dhaka's T-
Legionair
They should focus on dealing with passengers safety better, frequently delayed flights , annoying security checks , luggage theft and widespread bribery . More passengers will increase more chaos unless handled efficiently.

Photo: Star A 250-kilogram bomb was found buried at the construction site of the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today. Workers first saw cylinder-like bomb about three metres deep when they were excavating for construction work of the third terminal around 9:00am, said a high official of the security department of the airport. "It is a live bomb and there are explosives inside of it," the official said, wishing to remain anonymous. On information, the bomb disposal unit of the airport rushed to the spot and recovered the bomb. "The 250-kilogram bomb is usually called a 'general purpose' bomb. It might have been dropped there at some point during the Liberation War in 1971," the official said. The bomb was taken to Mymensingh Rasulpur base of Bangladesh Air Force around 2:45pm to deactivate. https://www.thedailystar.net/city/news/old-230kg-bomb-found-buried-dhaka-airport-possibly-1971-2008469
