Bangladesh Army strengthens defence of Barishal

The Bangladesh Army has raised eight new formations and units for the 7 Infantry Division based at the Sheikh Hasina Cantonment in Barishal, located in southern-Bangladesh.

The new formations include the 7 Air Defence Artillery Brigade, Para Commando Brigade and 28 Infantry Brigade. Units raised today are the 49 Field Regiment Artillery, 12 Signal Battalion, 66 East Bengal Regiment, 43 Bangladesh Infantry Regiment and 40 Supply & Transport Battalion.

The 7 Infantry Division was raised on 8 February 2018 as part of the Forces Goal 2030 modernisation and expansion blueprint of the Bangladesh Army.

Previously the region did not maintain any permanent Army presence and was reliant upon the 55 Infantry Division from Jashore for defence.

On 14 November 2017 the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the establishment of the new cantonment and 7 Infantry Division.

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed attended the flag raising ceremony for the new formations and units on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
