BGB buying ATGM, anti-tank mines

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh’s first line of defence is purchasing anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) and anti-tank mines for the first time. It will be the second armed organisation to maintain such armaments after the Bangladesh Army.

At present the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) issues rocket propelled grenade launchers (RPG) and 75mm recoilless rifles to its battalions. Previously the BGB and erstwhile BDR used Belgian made RL-83 Blindicide anti-tank rocket launchers as its main anti-tank weapon.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has authorised 8 anti-tank guided missile systems to be issued to each of its regular battalions. The BGB is likely to stick to equipment already used by the Bangladesh Army or something that might be introduced in the near future in coordination with the Bangladesh Army.

Possibilities include Omtas, HJ-8L, HJ-11 (AFT-11) and HJ-12 (QRF units) short range anti-tank guided missile systems. Metis-M1 and Kornet-E could also be under consideration as the Bangladesh Army operates thousands of examples. Army sources stated each Metis-M1 missile cost $25,000 (USD).

There is a present requirement for at least 600 anti-tank guided missile launchers with 24 missiles per launcher, totaling to 14,400 missiles.

The large number of anti-tank guided missiles under procurement may force the Bangladesh Ordnance Factories (BOF) to obtain licence to manufacture anti-tank guided missiles in the future to meet the requirements of the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh.

There are also suggestions the BGB forces may obtain PF-98 anti-tank rocket launchers to replace obsolete recoilless rifles at battalion level.

Anti-tank mines could be imported from China or Eastern European countries as the Bangladesh Ordnance Factories itself does not manufacture any kinds of mines.
