Bangladesh defence budget increased over 10%, special allocations availed

The Bangladesh Armed Forces received a 10.4% increase in the budgetary allocation for FY2019-20 as compared to the previous year’s budget to BDT 32,101 crore. Moreover the government is providing funding for a number of important defence hardware purchases such as fighter aircraft, air defence, frigates and artillery systems that will see the military spending the most since the creation of Bangladesh in 1971.

The budget allocation for the Public Order and Safety division, which covers Police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar-VDP and the Bangladesh Coast Guard also increased by 3.9% from the previous year to BDT 27,636 crore. Defence communications also received a boost from integration with the Bangbandhu Satellite-1 launched in 2018 by Thales Alenia Space.

The armed forces are also in the midst of setting up new bases in different parts of the country for hosting submarines, aircraft and land forces. The government is purchasing land where required and paving the way for gradually developing the new cantonment facilities across the country through annual allocation over a period of time.
