  2. Rapid Action Battalion Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, is an elite anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police. It consists of members of the Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Border Guard Bangladesh and Bangladesh Ansar. It was formed on 26 March 2004 as RAT (Rapid Action Team), and commenced operations on 14 April 2004. The Rapid Action Battalion has been criticized by rights groups for its use of extrajudicial killings and is accused of forced disappearances. The force has also been involved in several high-profile crimes, including murder. Although rights group have described it as a "death squad," the US government officials in Bangladesh describe it as an "organization best positioned to one day become a Bangladeshi version of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation." History Rapid Action Battalion was formed on 12 July 2003 under the Armed Police Battalion (Amendment) Act, 2003. The act was passed through the amendment of Armed Forces Battalion Ordinance 1979. Each battalion of Rapid Action Battalion is commanded by Additional Deputy Inspector General rank officer or its equivalent in other forces. RAB cannot file cases with courts themselves but must be forward the cases to Bangladesh Police who will file the case with the court. RAB replaced the short lived Rapid Action Team (RAT) which was formed in January 2003. RAB has faced criticism for alleged extrajudicial killings from its formation. In an editorial on 23 July 2004 The Daily Star wrote "reign it in before it turns into a [RABid] monster." From 2004 to 2008 RAB had killed 1062 people. RAB has a media centre in Karwan Bazar. In March 2017, Intelligence Wing chief Lt Col. Abul Kalam Azad was killed in a bomb blast in Sylhet while raiding an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant hideout. RAB has 14 battalion size field units spread all over the country. Among them, 5 are located in the capital Dhaka. Activities Main activities and types of work done by RAB are: Counter-Terrorism RAB apprehended numerous terrorism suspects during the course of their tenure. Anti drugs RAB has been involved in the control of illegal substances such as Ya ba, Phensedyl and Heroin. Emergency help RAB provides immediate response for situations such as armed robbery and kidnappings. National common or annual needs Many national needs are filled by RAB by providing extra duty during Eid-ul-Fitr, Puja, world Ijtema and Akheri Munazat, among other events. They also contribute resources during elections, such as the Narayangonj City Corporation Election. RAB Photos and Images Personally I think despite all their shortfalls and criticism, RAB has managed to curb crime effectively in a country as densely populated as Bangladesh. So much so that the news of RAB arriving stabs criminals with fear. They have also been instrumental in ridding the country of terrorists and fundamentalists.

  3. China virus death toll leaps to 80 despite massive lockdown AFP, Wuhan, China The toll from China's viral epidemic spiked on Monday to 80 dead with hundreds of new infections despite unprecedented quarantines and travel lockdowns, as foreign governments scrambled to help their trapped citizens. The virulence of a contagion causing fear nationwide has prompted authorities to impose transport curbs around China to cut off transmission routes, and extend a national holiday to delay people travelling back to work. With many thousands of foreigners trapped in the ground-zero city of Wuhan, which is under a virtual lockdown, the United States and France were among several countries formulating plans to evacuate their citizens by plane. With the coronavirus also expanding globally, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus headed to Beijing to meet with government officials on the crisis. "My WHO colleagues and I would like to understand the latest developments and strengthen our partnership with China in providing further protection against the outbreak," he said on Twitter. Tedros last week stopped short of declaring the outbreak an international public health emergency, which would have prompted more concerted international action including possible trade or travel restrictions. Cases have been reported as far afield as France, the United States and Canada, with various countries in Asia also detecting cases. Those infected had previously been in China. The new additions to China's death toll came entirely from the epicentre province of Hubei, which on Monday reported 24 fresh fatalities. Most fatalities and overall cases have been in Hubei, and the government says the deaths have largely been elderly or people already weakened by pre-existing health conditions. - Thousands of cases - But China's National Health Commission said on Monday that in addition to 2,744 confirmed infections nationwide -- an increase of 769 -- there were nearly 6,000 suspected cases and more than 30,000 people under medical observation. Hardest-hit has been Hubei's capital Wuhan, where the virus is suspected to have come from animals in a market selling a wide range of exotic wild game. Wuhan has been under virtual lockdown for days, with transport halted and citizens told to stay at home. The national government decided it would extend the Lunar New Year holiday and related school closures beyond the original January 30 end date to "reduce population flows," state media reported. The holiday was extended to February 2. Several cities responded, with new school terms delayed in Beijing until further notice, and Shanghai postponing until February 17. The city of Suzhou in eastern Jiangsu province also ordered companies to extend the end of the holiday until February 9. Hundreds of millions of Chinese travel long distances to gather with family members for the holiday, a key concern for authorities struggling to corral the highly contagious pathogen. The previously unknown virus has caused global concern because of its similarity to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed hundreds across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003. - 'Getting stronger' - At a press briefing in Beijing on Sunday, the head of China's disease control agency, Gao Fu, said it was "not as powerful as SARS," but officials warned it could be getting stronger. Shandong province in the east and four cities -- Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Tianjin -- have announced bans on long-distance buses entering or leaving, while some provinces and cities made it mandatory to wear face masks in public. The United States and France were among a host of countries making arrangements to get their citizens out of Wuhan, a major industrial and transport hub of 11 million people. The crisis has overwhelmed Wuhan's hospitals prompting authorities to send hundreds of medical reinforcements including military doctors, and start construction on two field hospitals. Speaking at a press conference and wearing a face mask, Wuhan's mayor Zhou Xianwang said Sunday the city's medical staff were "very strained and tired". Some foreigners in Wuhan pleaded to be evacuated, saying they were short on supplies. "We want to be evacuated as soon as possible, because either the virus, the hunger or the fear will kill us," Mashal Jamalzai, a political science student from Afghanistan studying in Wuhan told AFP. The Wuhan meat market at the epicentre sold a vast range of unusual dinner fare including rats, snakes and hedgehogs. On Sunday, the government said it was banning all trade in wildlife until the emergency is over, but conservationists called for Beijing to make the ban permanent to reduce the possibility of future outbreaks.

  4. RAB rescues 13 Rohingya women from traffickers in Dhaka’s Aftabnagar Published: 27 Jan 2020 01:11 AM BdST Updated: 27 Jan 2020 01:11 AM BdST The women rescued on Sunday are around 18 years old, said ABM Faizul Islam, an additional superintendent of police at RAB. The arrested trafficking suspects are Kabir Ahmed, 40, and Md Imran, natives of Teknaf. The RAB seized a huge amount of fake passports, birth certificates, birth registration and passport forms, Faizul said. The arrestees have confessed to trafficking seven people abroad in December last year and five more this month, according to the RAB official. “This group mainly sells the young women to international traffickers abroad to employ them as sex workers,” he said. The victims are forced to work at bars and brothels in different countries, including Malaysia and Dubai, Faizul said. The suspects made the passports for the women using fake addresses with the help of “dishonest government officials”, he said. The group cons helpless young women displaced from Myanmar to Dhaka for trafficking, the RAB official said.

  6. I was astonished when I came to know that their share in mobile phone market was over 80% back in 2014. Also, the entrepreneurs are definitely Bangladeshi citizens who were graduated from IBA.

  11. Completely agree, how do you expect the Fire Service to do it's work efficiently if the area gets crowded by people underneath because of nothing but curiosity and "mobile video" for attention? Before demanding quality performance, we ourselves need to be a quality citizen.

  12. The Fire Service is highly underrated in Bangladesh. Given the resources and manpower they have, they did an amazing job in the Banani incident. Sadly, us Bangladeshis enjoy criticizing people more than we enjoy applauding people for their effort

  14. You're making assumptions as to whether I know or not. I teach these issues to people. Anyways I've not taken offense to your statement. It doesn't matter what Sanders says. He will have his hands tied when dealing with this issue. Congress and Senate won't allow him to do a lot of things that he might want to do. There isn't much support for such policies from any major segment of Democratic or Republican Party. American system functions in such a way that Sanders being completely clean from corporate interest won't be able to make major change. He might close 1-2 bases but no major change will come. Trust me. All these bases serve American interest and as such America can't give away its valuable possessions.

  15. I'm all for helping Burmese groups as long as they not Muslim. Radicalization of Muslims will have a spill over into Bangladesh that we should strictly avoid. Moreover, so called islamic terrorism game will emerge and things will get out of our control.

  16. That is exactly the reason Pakistani and Indian forces should have been better at dealing with this situation ! Despite decades of engagement and experience they failed to respond adequately.

  17. Holey Artisan, the previous Sylhet issue and subsequent operations have highlighted the quality of BD special forces. Neither India nor Pkaistan with all their elite forces have been able to conduct operations with such elegance and sophistication as we did. In my view given the wide ranging tribute and respect paid to Bangladeshi special forces by regional commanders for their successful completion of missions, Bangladeshi special forces are probably the best. Both Indian and Pakistani forces failed to conduct missions with the rate that our forces have done.

  18. Really excited about the Apache purchase, but I reckon they should get another 8 - 16 units. Regardless, looking forward to see what more the armed forces can obtain from the US now that the initial steps have been made.

  19. Bangladesh should increase its economic and political cooperation with Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka & Maldives to keep the Indians from being overly adventurous. Pakistan is a fallen tiger and can no longer keep India in check, therefore Bangladesh has to step up and use its new found international and subcontinental reputation to keep the Status quo alive. Currently only Bangladesh can match India in the region in terms of development anyway.

  20. Thanks for the photos. This is not the first time the Bangladesh Navy warships visited Malaysia. They do it each time when they are ferrying warships from China and also regularly participate in LIMA Exhibitions.
